A Bowl of Chili, A Roof for a Family
The 21st Annual Habitat for Humanity Chili Cook-Off and Bake Sale are set for Friday, October 24, 2025, on the Smithville town square and courthouse lawn. This beloved fall tradition brings the community together for friendly competition and fundraising, supporting Habitat’s mission to build affordable homes in DeKalb County.

Record Number of Teams
This year, according to Sharon Evans of the Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity board, the event welcomes 17 chili teams, with five new first-time teams joining the roster. Each participating team must provide five gallons of chili to set up and serve, ensuring plenty of flavor for attendees.
New Sponsor, New Opportunity
For the first time, Cumberland Presbyterian Church is sponsoring a family to have a home built in DeKalb County. Applications for this opportunity are accepted until October 30.
Chili Honors and Awards
Teams from local businesses, banks, churches, and civic organizations compete for honors such as Top Chili, Best Decorated Booth, and the coveted Golden Spoon Award for most donations raised at their booth. The Golden Spatula Award also returns, given for the largest baked goods donation to the popular Treat Tent.

Last Year’s Success
Last year’s cook-off featured 14 teams, more than 600 bowls of chili served, and raised $10,000 for Habitat’s next home project in DeKalb County. Smithville Electric took top chili honors, with “The Courthouse Gang” and “Close the Deal” following closely behind.

Community Invitation
Organizers invite everyone to enjoy chili tasting, baked treats, and the spirit of community while supporting Habitat for Humanity on October 25. Admission is free, and tasting tickets are sold on-site. In the event of rain the event will be held at the Community Center.
